Cambridge Centre for Housing & Planning Research

This project looked into the housing needs of older people in London for the Greater London Authority. It was commissioned as a ‘think piece’, looking specifically at the role of the planning system in helping to ensure that older Londoners have a genuine choice of homes that they can afford and which meet their requirements for different sizes and types of dwelling in the highest quality environments.

The GLA wished to increase its understanding of the future scale, nature and range of older Londoners' housing requirements in all tenures through to 2036. This included considering health, ethnicity, disability and affordability-related issues, the relationship between supply and demand now, and how and why this might change over time.

Findings would be used to put forward planning policy options to encourage a good match between requirements and supply while continuing to deliver mixed & sustainable communities, give priority to meeting affordable need and support independent living.

The role of the planning system in delivering housing choice for older Londoners, Report

This study was commissioned by the Greater London Authority to investigate the role of planning in meeting the housing needs of older Londoners. Partly a ‘think piece’, the study looked specifically at the role of the planning system in helping to ensure that older Londoners have a choice of homes that they can afford and which meet their requirements for different sizes and types of dwellings in high quality environments. The study also included original research on the scale of need for specialist housing at local level.
