The Shared Ownership Sector in 2020

The aim of this research was to provide an analysis of the shared ownership sector in 2020, with a focus on the supply and management side of the industry, rather than the demand side.

Our project for Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing collected both quantitative and qualitative data. A web- based survey collected quantitative data from shared ownership providers, and was be supported by CORE data. Interviews with a sample of shared ownership providers, lenders and wider sector stakeholders provided a more in depth understanding of the supply side of the shared ownership sector. A discussion of current management issues, including arrears and responses to the Covid-19 pandemic, was included in the report.

Kush Rawal, Director of Residential Investment at Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing, commented: “We are pleased that this report – the first of many that we plan to commission – proves the valuable role that shared ownership has in helping people take their first steps on the property ladder. We are determined to guide people every step of the way, with simple, clear and transparent language that ensures that there are no surprises down the line.”
