Cambridge Centre for Housing & Planning Research

CCHPR were asked to provide the Centre for Homelessness Impact with an overview of current modular and container housing provision in England and to assess whether this could be an effective way to address housing needs and, in particular, homelessness.

Modular homes are increasingly acknowledged as an innovative, affordable way of housing the homeless, both in the UK and internationally. The compact, portable nature of modular and container housing makes it possible to create and support small communities and these are seen as a way to support people affected by homelessness as they move towards independent living.

Our research for the Centre for Homelessness Impact established the existing evidence for the uses, impacts and outcomes of modular housing schemes In England and identified some of the barriers to implementing such schemes.
