Our report into self-build and custom housebuilding looks at the potential for this sector of the housing industry to help address the UK's housing crisis. Self-build and custom housebuilding has been consistently promoted as a way of boosting the diversity of housing supply, and our report makes a number of recommendations based on insights gathered during our evidence review. They address the lack of clarity in the assessment of the share of self-build and custom housebuilding in the UK housing market, the scaling-up of government interventions, and the constraints associated with self-build. The recommendations also tease out relevant lessons from European countries with a higher market share of self-build and custom housebuilding.
The report was launched at a virtual round table event hosted by Places for People and CCHPR in January 2022. Chaired by Andrew Baddeley-Chappell, the roundtable was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including government representatives and industry specialists.
