Involvement of Western Orientalists in Iranian cultural heritage affairs (1925-1979)

Drs Sara Mahdizadeh and Reyhaneh Shojaei's article for the Journal of Architectural Conservation examines unpublished primary sources in an attempt to shed new light on the role of Western Orientalists in 20th century Iran.

The article identifies and evaluates the contributions of a number of key figures from the west who influenced cultural heritage policies in Iran. It concluded that their involvement in cultural heritage affairs eventually led to a separation of the Iranian people from their cultural heritage after the Islamic Revolution, but that their efforts to promulgate the extensive cultural heritage of the Iranian people in the twentieth century, to Iran and the wider world, should not be undervalued.
